WWE Backlash 2025 is shaping up to be a blockbuster Premium Live Event as it celebrates its 20th edition on Saturday, May 10, live from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The show begins at 7 PM ET, streaming exclusively on Peacock for U.S. viewers and on Netflix internationally.
The marquee match of the night will see John Cena defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton in Orton’s hometown. The match was made official on the April 25 episode of SmackDown, where Orton interrupted Cena and issued the challenge face-to-face, promising to dethrone The Franchise in front of a raucous St. Louis crowd. In the women’s division, tensions boiled over on Raw when Lyra Valkyria called out Becky Lynch after being publicly disrespected. Following a heated exchange and a brief brawl that ended with Lynch standing tall, the match was made official: Lynch vs. Valkyria for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.
The U.S. Championship will be contested in a high-stakes Fatal Four-Way Match, with Jacob Fatu defending against Drew McIntyre, Damian Priest, and LA Knight. This comes after GM Nick Aldis amended the original triple-threat bout, acknowledging McIntyre’s prior win to earn a spot in the title match. Also confirmed is an Intercontinental Championship rematch between Penta and Dominik Mysterio. On the May 5 episode of Raw, Penta gained momentum by defeating JD McDonagh, overcoming outside interference from Finn Bálor, Carlito, and Chad Gable. Finally, Pat McAfee will step into the ring against Gunther, seeking revenge after the former Intercontinental Champion viciously attacked Michael Cole. Their clash promises to be deeply personal and intensely physical.
WWE Championship bout pitting John Cena (c) against Randy Orton was the first match announced. This was confirmed on the April 25, 2025 episode of SmackDown, when Orton confronted Cena and challenged him to meet for the title in Orton’s hometown. Becky Lynch, calling Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria a “loser” and taking credit for her success, irked Valkyria, who confronted her and challenged her to a title match at Backlash. Lynch initially walked away, but after a brief brawl that ended with Lynch standing tall, the match was made official. During the May 02 episode of Friday Night SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis initially announced that United States Champion Jacob Fatu would defend the title in a triple-threat match against Damian Priest and LA Knight.
However, after Solo Sikoa tried to remind him that Drew McIntyre won the #1 contenders match and should be the one to challenge Fatu, Aldis made the match a fatal four-way as Fatu will put the title on the line against McIntyre, Knight, and Priest at the PLE. On the May 05 episode of Monday Night Raw, Penta got back into the win column with an impressive win over JD McDonagh, while fending off interferences from Finn Balor and Carlito as well as from Chad Gable. Following the win, the promotion shortly announced an Intercontinental Championship match where Dominik Mysterio will battle Penta in a rematch from their recent meeting on Raw after WrestleMania show where Mysterio emerged victorious after an outside interference from JD McDonagh. After Gunther attacked Michael Cole, Pat McAfee stepped in but was ultimately choked out. Refusing to stay silent, McAfee delivered a passionate promo on Raw, standing up for Cole and demanding justice.
