Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight talents Leon Edwards vs. Sean Brady will go to war TONIGHT (Sat., March 22, 2025) inside The O2 in London, England at UFC London.
Edwards’ five-round loss to Belal Muhammads was a fairly embarrassing affair for “Rocky,” who showed up half-asleep and got thrown on his head by a rival he tried to dismiss outright. The silver lining is that Edwards managed to win two rounds while fighting terribly, so there is still hope that he can right the ship and get his career back on track. Brady, meanwhile, has done an admirable job of rebounding from his own loss to “The Bully,” winning consecutive fights to prove he’s still one of the division’s top contenders. At 32 years of age and approaching his 20th professional bout, Brady should be peaking right now and ready to make his run at UFC gold.
Edwards’ skill cannot be denied. He’s a nasty kickboxer with great form and dangerous weapons, particularly in the clinch and at long distance. His wrestling is outstanding as well, as Edwards became the first Welterweight to figure out how to stop Kamaru Usman’s onslaught and even took him down. How does a fighter with such skills lose fights? Urgency and ring craft. Edwards is historically content to fight to his opponent’s pace rather than push his advantage, which results in closer-than-necessary bouts. Furthermore, he’s too willing to back himself into the fence, where defending strikes and takedowns is simply harder. Ideally, Edwards can solve both problems by upping the aggression. Brady is a decent striker, but he’s not a power puncher. Edwards is sharper, more varied, and hits harder — he can take the initiative with a reasonably low level of risk. If Edwards is working forward and putting Brady on his back foot, he’s likely to land heavy shots and deny the takedowns quite well.
Brady might be the best submission grappler in the upper echelon of the Welterweight division. An excellent chain wrestler with absolutely smothering top control, Brady has developed his boxing well over the years and become a respectable striker as well. Still ... he wins this fight via wrestling. Finding some level of success on the feet — enough to keep Edwards honest — will be necessary to win the bout, but that success is still punctuated by a takedown attempt. There’s almost no doubt that Brady is going to attempt to replicate Muhammad’s strategy here. Beyond simple pressure and chain wrestling along the fence, a key part of Muhammad’s approach was refusing to acknowledge Edwards’ good work. If Edwards fired a powerful kick or scored with a nice jab, Muhammad did not back off a reset. He kept marching forward, refusing to let Edwards build any kind of momentum. More than the cage-cutting or wrestling itself, that’s going to be the major challenge for Brady, who has never looked particularly comfortable in a firefight. He’s going to have to take shots and press forward anyway without slowing, otherwise he’ll end up taking more and more damage over time.
