Preview:
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Flyweight contenders Maycee Barber vs. Erin Blanchfield will collide this weekend (Sat., May 31, 2025) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC Vegas 107.
Barber’s move to 125-pounds served as a perfect career reset. Her Strawweight run ended with a couple difficult losses, but it’s important to remember “The Future” was just 23 years old at the time, losing to more experienced fighters. Since jumping up in weight, she’s shored the gaps in her game and put the hurt on six straight opponents to really solidify herself as a title threat at 27 years of age. Just 26 herself, Blanchfield has already faced more than one of her division’s top talents. She’s positioned herself well as a future champion with three victories over former champions or title challengers.
Barber is one of relatively few women who can crack. She punches with a different fluidity than most, and she’s really dialed into how she wins fights during her recent streak, bullying her way into the clinch and battering her opponents from close quarters. The question is can she do so without giving up the takedown? With good strategy, I think she can. Though skilled with both, Blanchfield is probably better at shooting below the waist than upper body clinch trips, so automatically, being in the clinch takes away one of her best takedown options. In the clinch, it becomes a question of both physicality — an advantage Barber would appear to possess — and positioning. If Barber is focused on her head position and the underhook battle, she’s not likely to be taken down. Instead, she’ll be the one jamming Blanchfield into the fence, smacking her with elbows, and digging into the gas tank with knees.
Blanchfield is the best grappler in the division, an accomplished black belt who has won three of her UFC bouts via submission. Her wrestling is quite solid, if not overwhelming. Kickboxing is probably the prospect’s weakest area, but she’s still high-volume with some sneaky high kicks. All told, she has quite a rounded set of skills given her age and division. The end goal here is obviously to take down Barber and dominate from top position. Though Barber’s wrestling has certainly improved in recent years, she’s generally leveled up her getups more than the actual shutting down of shots, so a well-timed Blanchfield double should still get the job done. Blanchfield’s wrestling and grappling are definitely a threat to Barber, but there’s been clear and consistent progress in regards to shoring up her defensive grappling. Plus, in this fight specifically, that’s about the only threat to her. Blanchfield’s hands are simply so much less fluid and less powerful than Barber, meaning “The Future” can really focus on keeping her hips back and sprawl-ready while trading shots.
In addition, Barber’s style seems built for five rounds. Generally, she’s been building success as fights wear on by virtue of doing more damage than her opponents, allowing her to really rough ‘em up late. Blanchfield’s style leads her into the clinch already, and that’s the last place any Flyweight wants to be with Barber, so it feels likely that at some point she ends up chewed up from close quarters. Mateusz Gamrot has finally secured a fight after months of begging his fellow contenders to step up. Unfortunately, “Gamer” is one of those tough outs that most fighters want to avoid, particularly en route to a title shot, so the rough-and-tumble Pole is forced to settle for an unranked (but still dangerous) combatant. By now it’s no secret that Gamrot is a punishing wrestler who is one takedown away from joining the Top 5 record holders for most takedowns in the history of the lightweight division. Sounds impressive ... until you also see that Ludovit Klein has the highest takedown defense percentage of all time at 95.2 percent — even higher than 155-pound champion Islam Makhachev.
