The Chinese star has already won four consecutive fights and successfully defended her championship since recovering it at the end of 2023, and she will attempt to maintain her lead in the category by delivering Suarez her first professional loss this weekend in Sydney. Long seen as a potential champion, the 34-year-old Suarez now has the opportunity to compete for UFC gold. The former Olympic wrestling prospect and Ultimate Fighter champion has six victories and four finishes since her stint on the long-running reality TV program, and she hopes to become the sixth woman to hold the 115-pound weight class title by preserving her immaculate record and defeating Zhang.
At UFC 312 this weekend, heavyweight finishers Justin Tafa and Tallison Teixeira will face off in the evening’s last non-title event. Tafa, 31, is hoping to get things back on track after losing a unanimous decision to Karl Williams in his only match of 2024. Jimmy Crute, an Australian light heavyweight, returns to the Octagon on Saturday in Sydney against Brazilian Rodolfo Bellato. Crute jumped into the Top 15 in the 205-pound weight class after receiving his contract on the second season of Dana White’s Contender Series, winning four of his first five fights. However, after four consecutive fights without a win, including three stoppage defeats, the still 28-year-old prodigy decided to call it quits in the summer of 2023. Bellato took two chances to enter the UFC roster through Dana White’s Contender Series, losing to Vitor Petrino in his first fight before punching his ticket the following season with a win over Murtaza Talha. He made his promotional debut in Austin, Texas, in late 2023, overcoming some adversity to defeat Ihor Potieria, and will now try to improve on that performance when he returns to the ring for the second time.
In the opening battle of the UFC 312 pay-per-view main program, Jake Matthews faces Argentina’s Francisco Prado for the first time in the welterweight class.The 30-year-old Matthews, the second longest-serving Australian on the roster after Robert Whittaker, will make his 21st outing inside the Octagon this weekend.
